Unrestricted Pixar Renderman Free for Non-commercial Use – $495 Otherwise

August 11, 2014 by Rob Farber Leave a Comment

Want to do animation? Renderman is free for non-commercial use. Examples of non-commercial use-cases include evaluations, personal learning,
experimentation, research, and the development of tools and plug-ins for RenderMan. Otherwise, the price is $495. Register now for your own free non-commercial RenderMan and you will be notified when it becomes available: Register for Free Non-Commercial RenderMan.

Pixar states: Given the continually falling price of computing, trends point to studios and individual artists needing more and more rendering capacity. Reducing the cost of RenderMan
makes it more cost effective to expand capacity and generate higher quality pixels. Pixar has established a new price point to specifically encourage accessibility and remove barriers to growth.

Two extra points from the FAQ:

Q: What skills will I need to use Non-Commercial RenderMan?

As professional rendering software at the leading edge of technical development, familiarity with CG modeling, animation, lighting, and rendering concepts is important to properly utilize RenderMan’s capabilities. If you are not familiar with the process of creating and rendering images, we suggest becoming familiar with one of the CG authoring solutions listed above.

Q: Will the Free Non-Commercial RenderMan be restricted in any way?

No. There is only one RenderMan and the free Non-Commercial RenderMan will be exactly the same as the commercial version used by creative artists the world over, offering full and complete access to its capabilities. The only limitation is that upon acceptance of the EULA upon installation, the software is only thereafter used for non-commercial purposes.
